Forward planning staves off starvation

As Malawi continues to rebuild after devastating cyclones earlier this year, JCT continues to operate under trying conditions. There is some good news, however. In what has proved to be an astute piece of forward planning, the foundation purchased a year’s supply of soya flour upfront, immunising it against the worst of the current food shortages and sky-rocketing prices.

This has helped them maintain its zero-case record of malnutrition in under-5s, as well as keeping absenteeism in its schools low.

There remain challenges, however. The most pressing need is support for the:

  • Rebuilding of kitchen shelters washed away by the floods
  • Recommissioning of boreholes to secure clean water at some centres
  • Funding to enable the transportation of food, staff and for monitoring visits
