August 2000

Emlyn John and Pastor Michael Thomas meet on the border of Malawi and Tanzania.

September 2000

The John C Thomas Children’s Foundation is formed.

June 2001

JCT registered as an NGO with the Government of Malawi.

January 2003

The first orphan centre, in Nsanje District opened, supporting over 1000 registered orphans and vulnerable children.

May 2004

Land gifted by Chief Tengani for the Nsanje community to grow more maize and vegetables.

January 2005

Two new centres opened: in Lilongwe – with 250 registered children and a nursery school – and in Chitipa, with 700 registered children.

August 2005

JCT registered with the Network of Vulnerable & Orphaned Children (NOVOC), in Malawi.

November 2005

HIV/AIDS awareness programme set up in Lilongwe with funding from Action Aid Malawi.

March 2006

JCT becomes a registered member of CONGOMA (Council for Non-Governmental Organisation of Malawi).

April 2006

The first Friends of JCT fundraising website set up in the UK.

November 2006

Land donated by the local community in Lilongwe to build JCT’s first school. Brickmaking started.

April 2007

School build started in Mutu village, Lilongwe.

June 2007

Village loan schemes for people living with HIV/AIDS set up with funding from Action Aid.

August 2007

Small-scale irrigation schemes set up in four areas to create vegetable gardens for income generation.

April 2008

School build started in Chitipa, Isharikira village.

September 2008

The first JCT football team is set up. Three boreholes drilled in Lilongwe.

November 2008

JCT mobile HIV/AIDS counselling and testing clinic set up in collaboration with Partners In Hope, a private hospital in Mutu village, Lilongwe.

August 2009

Mutu village school, in Lilongwe, opened.

March 2010

Expansion of JCT’s ‘grow your own’ programmes.

December 2010

Construction of feeding shelters and programme areas at Nasala and Zama.

March 2011

Soil-enriching tree-planting programmes started in collaboration with Concern Worldwide.

June 2011

Goat and piglet loan schemes started to encourage livestock breeding at a local, household level.

September 2011

Advocacy campaigns against child labour in tobacco fields launched.

March 2012

Rabbit-rearing scheme launched, providing food and income generation opportunities for families who cannot afford to rear livestock.

August 2012

Borehole recommissioned for the community in Mutu, Lilongwe.

July 2013

Building work started to house live-in volunteer carers at each of our feeding centres, in Chitipa, Nsanje, Mangochi, and Lilongwe.

March 2014

Pit latrines constructed in the Mangoche centre.

September 2014

Early Childhood Centre expansion, in Lilongwe, completed, providing a new kitchen, meeting hall, and centre manager’s house.

March 2015

Eco San toilets installed in Lilongwe, providing free, manure fertilizer for the wider community.

June 2015

The Ministry of Education and Science and Technology allocate 19 qualified teachers to the JCT primary school in Lilongwe.

October 2017

Official growth monitoring of the children starts in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

June 2018

New boreholes commissioned to provide safe drinking water in four JCT care centres.

October 2020

The JCT Foundation celebrates its 20^th anniversary.

October 2021

Six new boreholes built for three care centres and their wider communities in Lilongwe.

April 2022

Six boreholes built in Mangochi – one at each centre, plus one for each of the local catchment communities.

April 2023

The rebuild begins following the devastation wreaked by Cyclone Freddy.

March 2024

New youth club programme launched.

June 2024

Volunteer centre workers’ household food security and income-generation piggery programmes launched.

August 2024

Three new boreholes handed over to catchment communities in Lilongwe.

July 2025

Piggery programme extended to five more community centres. 252 pigs purchased, to date.

The main objective of the JCT Children’s foundation is to promote the social economic and education status of orphans, vulnerable children and those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS within the rural communities of Malawi.

The community-based projects work to provide food, health & medical treatment.

The foundation also seeks to increase access to basic education standards, support agriculture, HIV/AIDS education, improve their habitat & livelihood, water & sanitation and nutrition, helping bring about transformation and sustainable development.
